NAMPA — The message was simple from Lake City girls basketball coach Bryan Kelly after Friday’s opening round loss to Centennial in the state 5A tournament.
Get back to what they do best.
And the Timberwolves did that on Friday, topping the Kuna Kavemen 56-39 in a loser-out game at the Ford Idaho Center.
Lake City (20-6) will face Mountain View (21-5) of Meridian in the consolation championship game today at 9 a.m. PST at Ridgevue High in Caldwell. Kuna finishes 11-14.
Lake City beat Mountain View 42-28 earlier this season in the TimberLion tournament in Boise on Dec. 23 at Timberline High.
Sophomore Bridget Rieken had 15 points and 10 rebounds and senior Nina Carlson had 13 points and eight rebounds for Lake City. The Timberwolves jumped out to a 16-7 lead after the first quarter, but Kuna rallied to cut the deficit to 28-24 at halftime.
“They’re a scrappy team and fly around, so we wanted to make sure we were attacking the basket,” said Kelly, whose team finished the game 16 for 27 from the free-throw line. “We wanted to pound the ball inside and get to the basket. With a team like that who flies around, you need to be aggressive and get to the rim.”
“Our gameplan was to get the ball inside because they’re short,” Rieken said. “Most of our posts were open inside. We didn’t want to finish with a loss. We just wanted to go out there and play well.”
Payton Barber scored six of her eight points in the first quarter to spark the Lake City offense.
“I was proud of Payton for coming off the bench, hitting a couple of big shots and getting us going,” Kelly said. “She played great. Chloe (Teets) did a good job of getting the ball up the court. She really drives us and gets the ball to where it needs to be. Bridget and Nina really responded tonight and it shows the competitive nature of this team.”
Rieken scored 9 of her 15 points in the second half, including six in the final quarter.
“It was a quiet 15 and 10 for her tonight,” Kelly said. “But she’s going to give you everything she’s got the entire time. She wasn’t hitting her shots last night, but she really came out and attacked the basket tonight. She’s just a competitior too.”
Lake City finished the game 16 of 42 from the field.
“We’re not a great outside shooting team, so that’s why it’s important for us to pound the ball inside,” Kelly said.
Madi Thurston scored 12 points for Kuna, which finished 15 of 52 from the field.
