Cardinal men whip CCS, move into first

COEUR d’ALENE — Sam Dowd racked up 29 points, six assists and five rebounds and North Idaho College roared from behind in the second half to defeat Community Colleges of Spokane 93-71 on Saturday at Rolly Williams Court to move into sole possession of first place in the Northwest Athletic Conference East Region.

Markus Golder added 19 points and 11 rebounds for NIC (22-3, 10-2 SWAC), which broke a first-place tie with CCS (20-5, 9-3). Dalen Erickson hit 5 of 9 3-pointers and added 15 points — all in the second half — off the bench for the Cardinals, who have won seven straight since a 101-94 loss at Spokane on Jan. 21. Ziggy Satterthwaite had 12 points, nine boards and eight steals.

Trailing 44-41 at halftime, NIC outscored CCS 52-27 in the second half.

“We just bought in and played hard on the defensive end, and came out with a big win,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “Spokane is the highest-scoring team in the NWAC, and we had to win it on the defensive end.”

Levi Taylor led the Sasquatch with 23 jpoints.

NIC plays host to Columbia Basin on Monday at 8 p.m. in a makeup game.

COEUR d’ALENE — Former Priest River High standout Katlyn Summers Ward totaled 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Sasquatch defeated the Cardinals in Northwest Athletic Conference East Region play at Rolly Williams Court.

Brianna King scored a game-high 19 points for Community Colleges of Spokane (20-3, 11-1), which leads the East Region. The Sasquatch jumped out to a 26-16 lead after one quarter, and led by as much as 26 points.

Gia Sorn had 16 points to lead NIC (12-11, 5-7), which was outrebounded 49-30.

NIC plays host to Columbia Basin on Monday at 6 in a makeup game.
