Genesis Prep finishes third, earns first trophy from state

NAMPA — Sophomore guard Rachel Schroeder had 19 points and five steals as the Genesis Prep Jaguars, in their first trip to state, brought home a trophy with a 35-33 victory over the Nezperce Indians in the third-place game of the state 1A Division II girls basketball tournament Saturday at Nampa High.

Sophomore post Bella Murekatete added 10 points, 16 rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals for Genesis Prep (15-6), in just its second season as an Idaho High School Activities Association-sanctioned program. Josie Scribner also had five blocked shots for the Jaguars, who led by as much as 11 points early in the third quarter.

For the three-game tournament, Murekatete finished with 69 points, 68 rebounds, 14 blocked shots and 12 assists. Genesis Prep has no seniors on its roster.

Maddie Stapleton had eight points and 13 rebounds for Nezperce (20-4).

BOISE — Bidding for their first trophy from state since 1988, the Lumberjacks fell to the Cardinals in the third-place game of the state 2A tournament at Bishop Kelly High.

Sophomore Kaci Haeg had nine points and five rebounds for St. Maries (16-6), which on Thursday won their first state tournament game since 1990. Kelsey Auer, one of three seniors, added six points and nine rebounds for the Lumberjacks, who committed 32 turnovers on Saturday, after committing 38 in a semifinal loss to Ririe.

Kiersten Rasmussen had 14 points, six rebounds and four steals for Soda Springs (23-4).

MIDDLETON — The Spartans shot just 27 percent (12 of 44) from the field and fell to the Redskins in the consolation championship game of the state 3A tournament at Middleton High.

Avery Lynn Summers had 14 points and nine rebounds to lead Priest River (10-17), which was making its seventh trip to state in the past eight seasons.

Jenna Abbott had 28 points and eight rebounds for Teton (21-5), which shot 49 percent (23 of 47) from the field.
