NAMPA — It’s tough to win when you shoot 28 percent from the field in a game.
Throw 20 turnovers in, and it really becomes a tall task for Lake City.
Mountain View’s Taeli Carrillo scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first half, leading the Mavericks past the Timberwolves 43-32 in the state 5A girls basketball consolation championship game Saturday at Ridgevue High.
Lake City had 13 of its 20 turnovers in the first half, and fell behind 24-17 at the half.
“It’s tough to win when you’ve got 20 turnovers,” Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. “But I’m proud of them. Their backs were against the wall many times to get here. We got it to four points and just kept battling, but the ball didn’t bounce our way at the end. But it wasn’t from a lack of effort.”
Senior Nina Carlson had 14 points and senior Lauren Rewers had six points and six rebounds for Lake City, which finishes 20-7.
“Everyone on this team contributed,” Kelly said. “Our two seniors — Carlson and Rewers — set the bar for this program, and hopefully the younger girls can see this and build from this. We did a great job, battled and got to state for a second straight year. I’m proud of them.”
Lake City finished fourth in the 2016 tournament.
“You want to be playing on Saturday down here, and we did,” Kelly said. “I’m proud of them.”
Carlson has signed with Idaho, and Rewers has signed with Hawaii.
“Those two, they’ve put a lot of work into becoming better as basketball players,” Kelly said. “Our program is where it is because of them. They love the game, and they’re trying to do the right things. I’m very proud of them. They’re going to go on and do some amazing things with their lives.”
Lake City will return starters Keara Simpson, Bridget Rieken and Chloe Teets next season. Rieken had six points and nine rebounds for Lake City.
“I think you’ve got to look at the experiences,” Kelly said. “Those younger girls have some work to do to play at the next level, but getting them down here and that experience gives them the drive to do that.”
Abby Kresier had 12 points and seven steals for Mountain View, which finished 22-5. The Mavericks, from Meridian, won the past two state 5A championships.
“They’ve got some talented guards,” Carlson said. “They definitely played a different style than us. We fought and battled. It was a tough game, but I’m proud of this team.”
