Post Falls shakes off loss in semis, takes third

NAMPA — There’s nothing wrong with third in your first appearance at state since 2013.
Outside of that bitter taste from a semifinal game.
But that feeling was long washed away by Saturday afternoon.
Junior Bayley Brennan had 15 points and two steals and freshman Tyler McCliment-Call added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists, leading the Post Falls Trojans past the Madison Bobcats of Rexburg 50-37 in the state 5A girls basketball third-place game at Ridgevue High.
“We talked about showing some character today,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “We were a little disappointed last night (after a 57-54 semifinal loss to Eagle), but we wanted to leave here with a good feeling. There’s nothing to be ashamed of finishing third.”
Post Falls — which returns everyone that played at state this season — finishes 21-3.
“We wanted to leave here today feeling good,” Allert said. “And also have that taste in our mouth of wanting more next year.”
Junior Melody Kempton, the Gonzaga commit who scored a combined 47 points in the Trojans’ previous two games, was held to four on Saturday.
“Melody at times, she’s had to carry us,” Allert said. “With this team, she doesn’t really have to. It’s always different kids stepping up. Last night (Friday), it was Sydney (Parks) and today it was Tyler that got us going. That’s what they do, they pick each other up and nobody really cares who gets the credit.”
Macky Morris had eight points and nine rebounds for Post Falls, which beat Coeur d’Alene for the state title in its last appearance in 2013.
“Obviously, we came down to win it,” Allert said. “We’re happy with this. You can say we’re happy, but not completely satisfied.”
Tyler McCliment-Call scored six points in each half for Post Falls, which held Madison to 16 second half points.
“Our coach talked about another team that was in a similar situation and worked really hard to finish third,” McCliment-Call said. “It was good to get third to bring something home. We were fired up to get to play for a trophy and try to get our anger out against this team.”
“She’s played that way all year,” said Allert of McCliment-Call. “She plays with no fear. Most of the time, really good things happen.”
Both teams had 16 turnovers in the game, but Post Falls held Madison to 27-percent shooting (13 for 48).
Hannah Wilson had 10 points for Madison, which finished 20-7.
