Local communities to host spring hunter ed classes

Spring Hunter Education Classes have been scheduled for a number of communities in northwest Montana. All hunter education classes are free of charge. By state law, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1985, must have completed the course to buy a hunting license in Montana.
All students must register online at the FWP website: fwp.mt.gov; click education, then click hunter education. Detailed instructions will be found at each class site.
Polson/Ronan/Pablo: Classes will start Tuesday, March 7, in Room 118 of the Beaverhead Math and Science building on the Salish Kootenai College campus in Pablo. All classes will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. A parent or guardian must accompany students under 18 to the first class. This may be the only class offered this spring. Plains: Orientation night for the Plains Hunter Education be on Monday, March 6; it will begin at 6 p.m. at the Plains High School. Students will pick up their manuals and get course instructions. Classes will then meet at the high school beginning at 6 p.m. on March 27-31; field day will be Saturday, April 1 (Bowhunter education will start on April 3 with a similar schedule). Lighted nock proposal approved
Montana archery hunters will be allowed to utilize another piece of equipment this fall in their pursuit of game. During its Feb. 10 meeting, the Montana Fish & Wildlife Commission approved the use of lighted nocks on arrows during the 2017 archery-only season and in archery equipment-only areas or hunting districts.
State promoting Wear Your Life Jacket to Work day
This year, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is supporting “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work” Day on Friday, May 19. FWP joins boating professionals and enthusiasts to heighten awareness of different life jacket types that are available, including inflatable life jackets and demonstrate their comfort and versatility by wearing them to work.
Shed hunters reminded to hold off until spring
Winter can be a tough time for us humans, whether struggling with a pesky cold or digging out from the latest snowstorm. Now imagine what it’s like for Montana’s elk population. It’s an especially stressful time for elk, with deep snow and limited food options. That’s why Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is asking shed hunters and other recreationists to give elk their space until the snow melts and the animals are less stressed.
