The show’s story is about McKenzie, a fifth-grader assigned to research Edward Pulaski for a school report. When McKenzie happens upon Pulaski’s daughter Elsie’s diary, she relives the terrifying and heroic events of the Big Burn, the “Great Fire” of August 1910 that ravaged North Idaho’s Silver Valley.
McKenzie becomes Elsie as she anxiously documents the fate of the town of Wallace in her diary — in particular her father Edward’s legendary efforts to save his forest service troops from the devastating fire. Through the town’s trials, she comforts her friend Mary, even as she herself is terrified. After Edward returns a hero, Elsie — and McKenzie in turn — realize the value of teamwork, family and self-sacrifice.
The education-based, 45-minute musical is a production of Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre’s “CST on the Road” project, a program designed to bring a merging of art and education to elementary schools in the Northwest. “CST on the Road” shows feature professional actors who travel to schools to perform these shows.
School performances of “Living Through the Fire” are being booked through the end of this school year. To book a show for a school, call (208) 660-2958 or email [email protected].
