The Sandpoint Community Garden, located at Dub’s Field on the corner of Pine and Highway, is taking plot reservations for the opening of its ninth season.

“Garden plots are already 83 percent sold so if you’re interested in growing your own veggies, flowers or berries, the time to act is now,” said Pat Wentworth, Community Garden coordinator. “All the info you need to secure a spot is on our website.”

The group can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/sandpointcommunitygarden/

While each season brings with it a need for new supplies, Wentworth said plot fees have remained the same since the beginning and barely cover the cost of water for the 72 plots.

The cost is $20 for a 4-foot by 8-foot plot and $25 for a 7-foot by 7-foot plot.

The fees cover water, use of garden tools, and any items donated by the community. The group’s alliance with the Sandpoint Parks and Recreation Department has helped immensely, yet there are still items needed that help keep the cost of the garden beds affordable to all.

This season, Wentworth said those items include more garden soil, aged manure and composting material (grass clippings (non-chemically treated), straw, leaves). We also are in need of a couple of 50-foot hoses and three watering wands. Used equipment is fine as long as it works, she said.

Finally, seed and vegetable starts are greatly appreciated and are used for planting in the seven plots reserved for donations to the food bank and other community food organizations.

All donations can be dropped off at the garden and put in the shed.

“Thanks to our wonderful Community for your support,” Wentworth said. “This project helps so many and has created a group of people who are enthusiastic about growing their own food while creating beauty for all to enjoy.”
