Traffic on Interstate 90 was backed up for much of the day Tuesday after a semitrailer crashed while traveling through Fourth of July Pass, east of Coeur d’Alene.

The crash occurred around 10 a.m. in the westbound lanes.

An investigation by Idaho State Police revealed Patrick Blunt, 53, of Gainesville, Fla., was westbound on the interstate in a 2007 Volvo truck pulling a loaded 53-foot trailer.

Investigators said Blunt was traveling too fast for the roadway and environmental conditions and lost control in a sweeping left corner shortly after starting down the west side of the pass. His vehicle left the roadway’s right shoulder and struck the raised concrete jersey barriers, displacing approximately 60-80 yards of barriers.

The tractor went over the barriers and rolled, coming to rest hanging over the embankment on its driver’s side while still attached to the trailer. The trailer stayed upright and on the westbound shoulder of the freeway.

Blunt was transported to Kootenai Health where he was treated and released. Blunt was also cited for inattentive driving.

The recovery of the Volvo tractor, by Superior Towing, took until around 7 p.m.

ISP troopers were assisted on scene by ISP Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Specialists, Coeur d’Alene Fire/EMS, and Idaho Transportation Department personnel.
