NAMPA — One by one, the brothers Edelblute started an impressive march to the top step of the awards stand at the state 4A wrestling tournament at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa on Saturday.

And when it was all over, the Lakeland Hawks had gone 5 for 5 in the finals, en route to a third-place finish.

Freshman Alex Edelblute won at 98 pounds, and was followed by sophomore Sam Edelblute (106), junior Will Edelblute (113), junior Larry Johnson (138) and senior Jared Walker (195) as state champs for Lakeland.

“It was an impressive weekend,” said Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute, uncle to the three Edelblute brothers. “The pressure just kept building. Alex won, then his brother (Sam) had to out-do him. Then the pressure was on Will, and Larry ... and Jared probably had the most stress, knowing he was the last one.”

Minico of Rupert won the team title with 247 points. Defending champ Caldwell was second with 236.5, and Lakeland, second last year, was third with 185.

In the finals, Alex Edelblute avenged a 13-3 loss to Kase Mauger of Twin Falls, less than a month ago at the Hall of Fame dual at Meridian. This time Edelblute pinned Mauger in 1:54.

“I wrestled a lot better this time,” Alex said. “I was just taking bad shots (the last time), and he would score off my shots. It (the loss) helped me get better at my shots, get better at takedowns.

“Three brothers winning, that was pretty cool, people are going to remember that.”

Sam Edelblute lost to Joshua Gallup of Skyview in the 98-pound finals last year. On Saturday, Edelblute beat the top-seeded Gallup 8-6.

“I was definitely a lot bigger this year than last year; it gave me a little bit of an advantage,” Sam said. “And I think I worked harder than last year, for sure.

“When Alex won, I feel like it motivated me to win. It made me want to win even more, once Alex won. And when Willie won I was really, really happy.”

Will Edelblute was second last year at 106. This weekend, he was the No. 2 seed behind Pierce Mederios of Mountain Home, a two-time state champ.

“I knew he would be pretty nervous, being his senior year,” Will said of Mederios. “I just wanted to go out and wrestle smart and try to win it again.”

Edelblute got an escape with a minute left for the only point of the match, and held on as Mederios pressed for the takedown.

“It was probably one of the most stressfull minutes of my life,” Will said.

Johnson made it three state titles in three years with a 6-3 win over Christian Hudson of Caldwell.

“This year I just wanted to be more dominant and I think I proved it in all my matches,” said Johnson, who finished 39-1 — the lone loss in the finals of Tri-State to Dalton Young of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls, Wash.), who went on to win his fourth state title. “Just watching all three of them (Edelblute brothers) do that was an awesome experience. Especially watching Willie’s match really pumped me up. He’s always been a hard worker, always had tough kids in his weight class.”

Walker closed out his high school career with his second state title, a 6-4 win over Nathan Sargent of Blackfoot.

Walker, who won last year at 170, pointed to a couple losses this year — one at Tri-State and one in Reno — as motivation.

“I was just enjoying my senior season, not focused on my goals, and those two losses made me realize what my goal was,” said Walker, who hopes to wrestle in college next year.

Lakeland had two other placers — Tavis Woempner third at 113, and Brian Edelblute — cousin to the other three Edelblutes — fifth at 126.

Owen Stebbin of Sandpoint finished second at 182. Hyrum Hunsaker was fourth at 160, Preston Bunty sixth at 152.

3A: Tanner Figueroa won at 145 for Kellogg, which finished 11th. Taylor Bush was second at 98 for the Wildcats.

Isaiah Evans was third at 106 for Timberlake, which finished 8th. Brayden Herbert (98) and Connor Yanez (170) were sixth for the Tigers.

Spencer MacDonald was second at 152 for Priest River, which finished seventh. Samuel Hernandez (285) and Noah Jamison (160) were third, Brandon Downs sixth at 113 for the Spartans.

2A: St. Maries senior Dylan Edwards capped a 32-0 season by winning the 152 pound title. Edwards pinned Hazen Smith of Malad in 34 seconds in the championship match.

Caden Hall was third at 160, Matt Morris sixth at 126 for the Lumberjacks, who finished 12th.

Austin McKinnon was sixth at 106 for Wallace.
