Cardinal men close in on clinching East

COEUR d’ALENE — Markus Golder had 29 points and 13 rebounds to lead North Idaho College past the Walla Walla Warriors 88-75 in a Northwest Athletic Conference East Region game on Saturday at Rolly Williams Court.

Both teams have clinched berths to the conference tournament starting March 9 at Everett Community College.

NIC (25-3, 13-2 NWAC) can wrap up the East Region title with a win at Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday.

Zaequan Satterthwaite had 24 points and 11 rebounds for NIC.

“Both Markus and Ziggy had really big nights for us,” NIC men’s basketball coach Corey Symons said. “Markus was doing a good job of attacking the basket and getting to the rim. Both Ziggy and Jalen played great and Sam did what Sam does (with 13 points and 10 assists). It was just a total team effort.”

Former Post Falls High standout Dalton Thompson had 15 points for Walla Walla (20-7, 11-4).

COEUR d’ALENE — Cierra Dvorak had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals in a loss to the Warriors in a Northwest Athletic Conference East Region game at Rolly Williams Court.

“Overall, I thought we played a good game of basketball,” said NIC women’s basketball coach Chris Carlson, whose team was outrebounded 55-36. “Outside of the rebounding, we played a good game. They just really took it to us on the boards.”

With the loss, NIC (13-13, 6-9 NWAC) was eliminated from postseason play, and will conclude the season Wednesday at Wenatchee Valley.

Eilish Smith and Whitney Meier scored 12 points each for NIC.

Cierra Jo McKeown had 17 points and six rebounds and Jake Skidmore 14 points and 17 rebounds for Walla Walla (20-4, 13-2), which has locked up a postseason bid by finishing in the top four in the East Region.
