Slow time of the (business) year

Early January evidently often isn’t a time to start a business as the new places slated to open are mostly later this month. Therefore we’re short on “news” except for some classes below and some places we’ve detailed earlier (now in the lower Tidbits section).

Often readers ask how we get our news — so here’s a roundup:

I watch the commercial building permits and can get business names, addresses, details, owners and phone numbers from them.

I live in the northeast area, and when I drive to other areas I take different commercial routes and watch for things happening and signs such as “opening soon,” “sold” and “closed.”

Once on Neider Avenue west of Government Way I stopped and asked men in a field what they were surveying for. They wouldn’t answer. On my way back, they were gone so I walked into the field. In a far corner one stake said “CostCo.” Yea! Scoop!

Mostly I need you readers to let me know what you see. It’s best to use the email at the end of this column. Thanks!

Young Chefs Academy

planned for Hayden

A children’s cooking school called Young Chefs Academy is planned to open in February between Noodle Express and Papa Murphy’s Pizza in Prairie Shopping Center.

Owners Joey and Amber Garcia have combined 30 years experience in teaching and the restaurant business. They’ll offer weekly classes, workshops, camps and special events, and they’re looking for students and helpers. Email [email protected].

The 13-year-old academy is Texas based and has 35 locations.

All Things Art

offers new classes

“Let us help your creativity Flow” is the theme of Penny Moore’s All Things Art at 7880 N. Franklin St.

Classes have been added in knitting and crocheting for adults and cake decorating and more open to all. Phone 215-4471.

Now for the Tidbits

n We had details about these last week: Sweeto Burrito plans to open Tuesday off Appleway in front of Winco, Express Employment Professionals will open Jan. 30 in the west side of Winco, and Community First Bank will open Jan. 15 at 504 Sherman Ave.

n Watch for Traci & Charli’s full-service salon on Ironwood, Kitchen CDA in the Silver Lake Mall food court and Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurant to be where Skippers was off Highway 95 next to Silver Lake Mall (which Skippers is now inside).

n A Taco Loco will be where Valentino’s Pizza was off Canfield Ave. Cash & Carry store will be off Appleway, and Cosmic Cowboy Grill will be at Highway 95 and Haycraft Ave.

n In Hayden, the 1920s Soda Fountain has combined with Junior’s Barbecue in Prairie Shopping Center, an Asian eatery will be where Kynrede Cafe was and a gas station-convenience store in the southwest corner of Highway 95 and Lancaster.

n A major development called The Crossroads is proposed for Athol. Watch for details. We anticipate a Super 1, a bank, coffee shop, a motel, a gas station-convenience store, a restaurant and others.

n Downtown — Watch for Rustic Restaurant at 309 Sherman (next to Clark’s Jewelry). We also have Advanced Health Care and Schini Family Dentistry building new places in Riverstone. The Shilo Inn on Appleway will become a Comfort Suites with a major remodel.

n New places in Post Falls will be Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen, Green & Grounds Coffee Shop, Cricket Wireless, Silverlake Automotive and The Lean Bean.

n New places coming to the revised Post Falls Outlet Mall include Black-Ops Self Defense, My Big Fat Greek Deli, a comic book store and a coffee espresso store.

n Remember that the “..ward” words don’t end in “s,” “same exact” is redundant, “farther” means distance and “further” means intensity, and the temperature will be in the “20s” is simply plural, not possessive.
