Two men who allegedly broke into a vehicle parked at the Fourth of July Pass Recreation Area were caught by Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office deputies after stolen credit cards were used at Walmart and Cabela’s in Post Falls.

Jacob M. Shields, 32, of Rathdrum; and Justin L. Radford, 35, of Spokane Valley allegedly broke multiple windows of a vehcile Saturday, deputies reported. Three people who were cross-country skiing reported the theft of several items, including backpacks and credit cards, around 2 p.m. One of the skiers reported her credit card already had been used in the Stateline area since it was stolen.

A deputy reported to Walmart and Cabela’s to view video of two suspects using stolen credit cards at both locations, and after further investigation was able to identify Shields and Radford, KCSO reported. The deputy also obtained a vehicle description from store video. Deputies responded to Shields’ residence and reportedly found the stolen backpacks in his truck.

Shields was arrested for an outstanding theft warrant and also charged with two counts of burglary, possession of stolen financial transaction cards and criminal use of financial transaction cards.

Burglary, malicious injury to property, grand theft and criminal use of financial transaction card charges have been requested for Radford, KCSO reported.

The sheriff’s office reminds residents using recreational areas to secure personal property items, preferably out of sight, while away from their vehicles. When possible, keep items such as identification and credit cards on your person.
