n World Cup update — Mikaela Shiffrin skied out of the course in the Slalom at Zagreb, Croatia, falling one win short of tying the record for consecutive slalom wins. Resi Steigler led all US finishers in 7th place, followed by Megan McJames in 20th.
n Winter Trails Day — Schweitzer Mountain Resort and the Sandpoint Nordic Club will team up for a Learn to XC Ski Free Day at the Roundabout Trail on the road to Schweitzer Saturday, Jan. 7. Sessions are held on a groomed beginners trail, plus take advantage of free rentals and beginner ski lessons. In addition, you will receive a coupon for a $35 lesson package (rental, lesson, trail fee) valid on Jan. 16, 22 and Feb. 18.
Reminder, the Schweitzer bus service does not stop at the roundabout. Contact the Schweitzer Activity Center for details.
n Junior Race Series Kick-off — Registration is closed and the races begin Friday evening. Remember, the first session begins at 5 p.m., so come a little early to link with your team in the Lakeside Lodge.
n Northwest Cup Races — Mount Spokane will host one Giant Slalom and two Slalom races for U16 and above athletes this weekend. Both SARS and Independence Racing will be sending athletes for the event that doubles as a U16 Qualifier. Full report next week.

Not many sports present the number of variables to the athletes as ski racing (Alpine or Nordic). Our competitors braved it all and persevered.

Shiffrin nabs No. 65 and 66 — Mikaela Shiffrin continued her march to the all-time World Cup win record with a big weekend in Bansko, Bulgaria. She is rapidly becoming the greatest all event skier of all time.

World Cup — Tommy Ford had a busy weekend in Chamonix, France. He placed 16th in the parallel slalom and fourth in the parallel giant slalom. That said, he narrowly missed injury in the giant slalom when he lost a ski and skidded across his opponent’s path.
