ROYAL CITY — Royal High wrestling coach Pat Mitchell believes he’ll have a competitive team this winter, and the Knights’ performance at the Royal Christmas Tournament last week did nothing to discourage him.
Royal took two titles, one third place, two fourth places, one fifth place and two sixth places to score 143 points and finish fourth as a team. Reardan won the title with 184.5 points.
Before the meet, Mitchell noted his club went 2-1 in dual meets at the Best of the West tournament earlier at Pasco. He will field a full team as soon as a couple of boys make their weights.
As many as 10 Knights will make it to regionals, and as many as six could make it to state, Mitchell believes. He believes the SCAC East dual meet title will come to Royal and Warden, but he said Connell and Kiona-Benton will be strong.
The Knights are led by two third-place finishers at state last year. Eduardo Rodriguez, 126 pounds, and Abraham Medina, 132, took titles last week. Rodriguez won his final by pin, and Medina won his by technical fall.
“Both Eduardo and Abraham wrestled very well,” Mitchell said. “Regan Callahan beat a state place from Ki-Be. Effort was great by the kids.”
C. J. Quintero took third place at 182 pounds with a decision in his final match. Addin Felker finished fifth at 145 with a pin in his final match.
The fourth place winners were Daniel Bonilla at 152 pounds and Jose Jimenez at 195. The sixth place finishers were Jack Diaz at 170 and Ryder Eilers at 220.
