MOSES LAKE — Four incidents. Six acts of going above and beyond. Six Moses Lake Police Department officers were honored during a ceremony last week for their heroics in the line of duty over the past couple of years.
Although only six officers were honored during the ceremony held at the Moses Lake Civic Center, MLPD Chief Kevin Fuhr was quick to point out that there are countless stories of officers in the department doing extraordinary things on a daily basis.
“The department, the men and women of the Moses Lake Police Department, they work their tails off. And they do phenomenal jobs every single day,” Fuhr stated. “Most of what they do is behind the scenes, behind closed doors when nobody sees or hears about it.”
The following officers were honored during the ceremony:
• Officer Caleb Welsh – Life Saving Award: Welsh received the award for actions taken during a call on Aug. 9, 2016, when a woman positioned herself on the Interstate 90 overpass on West Broadway Avenue and threatened to jump off and end her life. A Grant County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the scene and was able to draw the woman’s attention while Welsh snuck up behind her and pulled her to safety.
• Sgt. Brian Jones – Meritorious Service Award: On Aug. 5, 2014 Jones assisted other MLPD officers in an operation to arrest a drug dealer during a controlled drug buy in the parking lot at Lep-re-kon Harvest Foods on West Broadway Avenue. Jones attempted to contact the suspect at the driver’s door when he pulled into the parking lot, but when the suspect saw Jones he put the car into reverse and reportedly backed into a patrol car. The suspect then put the car into drive and started driving toward a MLPD officer. Fearing one of his fellow officers was going to be struck by the car, Jones shot the male suspect twice. The suspect was caught and survived the gunshot wounds.
• Cpl. Aaron Hintz – Meritorious Service Award: On Dec. 30, 2013 the MLPD received a report of an “erratic male” with a knife yelling on South Belair Drive and barricading himself inside a residence with the knife. MLPD officers positioned themselves outside of the home and the subject was spotted inside the house holding a large knife. The man came to the front door with the knife and was directed by officers to drop the weapon. The man ultimately raised the knife over his head, as if he was going to attack the officers, and Hintz was forced to shoot and kill the man.
• Officers Nicholas Stewart and Kevin Hake – Medal of Valor/Officer Jack Dodson – Meritorious Service Award: Stewart and Hake received the department’s highest award for risking their lives during a call on Aug. 21, 2016. About 2 a.m. Stewart and Hake, along with Dodson, responded to a report of a vehicle upside down in an irrigation canal at the intersection of Road L Northeast and Road 5 Northeast. Clayton Clark, 18, and Jesus Cornejo, 19, were trapped in the vehicle and rescued thanks to the heroics of the three MLPD officers. Cornejo survived. Clark died a couple of days later.
