COEUR d'ALENE — The Dec. 29 death of a Coeur d'Alene man whose body was found at the scene of a domestic violence call was the result of an apparent suicide.

According to the Coeur d'Alene Police Department, 35-year-old Justin S. Westbrook died of self-inflicted knife wounds at his home in the 1000 block of Fallview Drive. Officers found him dead inside his home.

A 34-year-old woman involved in the dispute suffered severe head and facial trauma.

"This appears to have been a violent domestic assault followed by a suicide," CPD public information officer and detective Jared Reneau said in a press release Monday.

At 12:07 a.m., police scanner traffic noted a man was found unresponsive in his home with multiple stab wounds following the response of a woman who was bleeding from her face with swollen-shut eyes.

Dispatchers said the woman was located at a residence next door to the home from which she’d reportedly fled.

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department, which investigated the case, didn't provide details in the days following the man's death, but told The Press last week it was unlikely Westbrook had been slain.

"Given what officers found on the scene, it was unclear what had happened," Reneau told The Press last week. "There were obvious injuries that seemed consistent with stab wounds."
