A Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration will feature musical performances and presentations by students on Monday, Jan. 16 at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center.

The featured presentation of the evening will be Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last sermon, “Remaining Awake Through A Great Revolution,” as delivered at the National Cathedral in Washington on March 31, 1968, shortly before he was assassinated.

The event is free and begins at 7:30 p.m.

The evenings will feature Rob Quist, an American singer, guitarist, banjo players and award-winning songwriter. Also performing will be Flathead’s own tenor Mike Eldred, and musicians Erica Von Kleist and Jeremy Reinbolt as well as actors David Ackroyd and Jere Hodgin. The celebration will also include presentations by numerous community members and students, the Crown of the Continent Choir, and other prominent musicians.

Pastor Jeryl Hollinger, on behalf of Love Lives Here and the Mennonite Church, will present the annual Peace Award to a leading Flathead citizen.

Prior to the celebration, Love Lives Here will hold a party from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Whitefish Middle School cafeteria and gymnasium for a family movie and light meal.

The same celebration will also take place on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Flathead High School in Kalispell at 7:30 p.m.
