COEUR d’ALENE — Bayley Brennan sank her second game-winner in four days Tuesday, a jumper from the left baseline with 7 seconds left to lift the Post Falls Trojans past the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 46-44 in 5A Inland Empire League play at Elmer Jordan Court.
Brennan finished with 11 points for Post Falls (14-1, 3-0 5A IEL), ranked fourth in the most recent state media poll. Melody Kempton finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals for the Trojans.
Coeur d’Alene (5-7, 0-3) had a chance for the tying basket, but Kempton came up with a blocked shot as time expired.
“This is the way I expect ’em all to be,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said of league play. “I thought Coeur d’Alene was great; they played harder than we did, they played smarter than we did. I thought Kayla Fagan (Viking guard) played very well. She made some big shots and handled our pressure real well.”
Fagan scored 16 points for Coeur d’Alene. Halle Kane added nine points, including a fast-break basket that gave the Vikings a one-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Taryn Horvath’s 3-pointer with 40 seconds left tied the game at 44 for Coeur d’Alene.
“Honestly, all we’ve been talking about is effort,” Coeur d’Alene coach Scott Stockwell said. “Effort on the offensive end, effort on the defensive end. That’s what I was most pleased with. Our point guards, Kayla Fagan and Halle Kane, did a great job breaking their press.”
On Friday, Post Falls travels to Lewiston, and Coeur d’Alene visits Lake City in the Fight for the Fish spirit game.
