LOREN BENOIT/Press Lake City’s Griffin Schoch puts Coeur d’Alene’s Ethan Lillis on his back during the TerHark Cup Wednesday night at Lake City High School.

COEUR d’ALENE — With the 22nd annual TerHark Cup wrestling match swinging back and forth with competitive weight class after class, Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat didn’t quite realize just how dominant his boys were at first.

Once the dust settled — along with a 15th straight win over the crosstown rival Lake City Timberwolves — the Vikings truly pinned it down this time.

Coeur d’Alene had pins in all but one of its wins — Dom Jessos won by an 11-3 major decision at 98 pounds — to beat Lake City 52-32 in the annual rival dual at Lake City High on Wednesday.

“It was a battle,” Moffat said. “Lake City wrestled really well. We lost a couple of matches that could have gone the other way. We had a loss at heavyweight that we weren’t expecting, but they’ve got a lot of seasoned seniors. If you’re not ready for them, they’ll get you.”

Klayton Hindberg (152), Isaiah Skinner (170), Casey Randles (182), Alex Marshall (220), Hunter Schueller (106), Sam Reese (120), Garrett Ashby (126) and Mitchell Moffat (132) won by pin for Coeur d’Alene, which competes in the Rocky Mountain Classic on Friday and Saturday at Sentinel High in Missoula.

“I’ve been on both side of those kids of matches,” said coach Moffat of the pins. “It happens. It’s rare, but it happens. It kind of surprised me because a lot of the matches were competitive.”

Rusty Dan (195), Zane Lettau (285), Cyrus Mortensen (113) and Skylar Neils won by pin for Lake City, which also got a decision from Chase Lathim (145) and a major decision from Griffin Schoch (160).

“I thought our kids wrestled really hard,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Coeur d’Alene is a really good team and well-coached. You’ve really got to have it strapped on when you face them, and I thought our kids battled hard.”

Coeur d’Alene took control of the match with three straight pins from Reese, Ashby and Mitchell Moffat. Mortensen pinned Jacob Krous, a match he’d lost three times last season, in 1:31 to keep Lake City in striking distance.

“Cyrus has been working hard all year and it was a great win for him,” Owen said of Mortensen’s pin. “Heading into the those next three weights, those were weights I thought we could compete in. Those really put a dagger into our heart,” Owen said. “We had five freshmen in the lineup tonight and they got bumped a little. As long as they learn from this, that’s all I can ask.”

Lake City will face Belgrade and Whitefish tonight in Frenchtown, Mont.
