Jan. 15, 1967 — DEPUTIES SWORN IN

The courthouse was the scene of wholesale swearing in of all new and old county officials Monday morning.

Among deputy clerks sworn in were Neta Belwood, Stella Hawkins, Mollie Kalk and Hilda Pursley in the treasurer’s office; Marjorie Cady, Helen Ham, Geneva Newland, Lorena Deubel and Enid Ereman in the clerk-auditor-recorder’s office; and Flora Baker, Wanda Heitman, Dorothy Goullette and Jim Bixler in the assessor’s office.

NEW JUDGE BUSY

Dar Cogswell, new Eighth Judicial District Judge, held an active morning session Thursday taking care of eight matters in less than two hours.

WRONG CAR

Mrs. George Roberson called the police station last Thursday to advise that her mother had put some groceries in the wrong car at the Safeway parking lot. Misplaced items include eight gallons of canned milk and 100 pounds of potatoes.

Jan. 15, 1917 — ROBINS AND BLUEBIRDS

Whether or not it anticipates an open winter remains to be seen but robins and bluebirds have been plentiful during this week’s warm weather.

STUDENTS ENTERTAIN

Following Friday’s basketball game in the high school gymnasium the students entertained the visitors from the down-river town (Newport, Id.) at an informal party under the chaperonage of the high school teachers. A good time was the key-note of the evening and a large number attended.

“JUDGE” NOW INSTEAD OF “WHIT”

Will F. Whitaker is apt to lose his cognomen of “Whit” by which he has been familiarly known in Sandpoint for a decade. Monday, when he was sworn in as probate judge of Bonner county, he became “Judge” Whitaker. He was justice of the peace in the old days but the title “Judge” did not seem to follow in its wake. For awhile they called him “Senator” when he went to Boise as a member of the upper house. But the cognomen always drifted back to “Whit” by gravitation. Now it will be “Judge” Whitaker for two years anyway.

Judge Whitaker is a real old-timer, coming here from Helena in 1898. He was cashier for the Sandpoint Mercantile company, which later merged into Sandpoint Lumber company, which was bought by the Humbird Lumber co. in 1899.

CHAIRMAN ROADS AND BRIDGES

Significant is the fact that Representative Seymour of Bonner is made chairman of the roads and bridges committee of the house, where he will be in a position to press the Clarksfork bridge appropriation bill.
