MOSES LAKE — Ryan Karstetter fouled out late in overtime against Wenatchee.

Before leaving the floor, the senior captain walked up to each of his teammates to relay a simple message: “finish it.”

“Ryan gives us a lot of confidence,” point guard Cory Kunjara said. “He's a great captain and he's been pushing us through the whole year so him going out and giving us confidence to get a stop and get that dub (W) is big.”

Gio Walker scored the go-ahead basket with 10 seconds left, Kunjara and Zach Phillips added one free throw each and Moses Lake outlasted Wenatchee in overtime 70-67.

It was an emotional win as the Chiefs let a two-point lead with 7.5 seconds left in regulation get away and missed free throws in the extra period that kept the Panthers within one possession.

“We've got a ton of great kids,” head coach John Hohman said. “It's just, you know, they're young and we've kind of scaled back what we do — try to really focus on the little things, the details — and tonight we were fortunate to pull it out.”

Back-court foes Phillips and Tony Esquivel were the driving forces for their respective teams. Phillips tallied a game-high 35 points, including the final point of the night at the free throw line.

Esquivel, after scoring just two points in the first quarter, finished with a team-high 30 and made the game-tying lay-up at the end of regulation.

Esquivel was forced to drive with his left hand, but crossed over and pulled up just under the basket for an easy deuce.

“We got what we wanted — the turn,” Hohman said. “We tried to turn him and so he's going off the wrong hand and so it worked for us, but then he crosses over and we don't step up. We didn't do that tonight at all. A lot of times we'd get beat and our help wouldn't come up.”

In the overtime, Wenatchee held a slim lead before Karstetter drilled a corner three-pointer to give the Chiefs a 66-64 lead. Wenatchee tied the game at the free throw line before Walker's put-back on a miss by Phillips from the left corner.

Faced with another chance to stop Esquivel with the game on the line, Evan McLean forced Esquivel left again and caused a turnover as the ball sailed out of bounds.

“Evan knows how to get a stop,” Kunjara said.
