Deputies shot in Blanchard

BLANCHARD — Two Bonner County sheriff’s deputies were shot and injured Monday while trying to arrest a man at a home in Blanchard.
The armed suspect was also injured in the exchange of gunfire which erupted around 11:30 a.m. at 780 Mountain View Road, a few miles northwest of Spirit Lake near the Idaho/Washington border.
The deputies were each shot three times and transported to Kootenai Health where they underwent surgery. The wounded suspect was also transported to the hospital.
“At this time, the deputies are in satisfactory condition and are expected to recover,” wrote Kootenai County Sheriff’s Det. Dennis Stinebaugh in a statement issued at 5:30 p.m. “The suspect is still undergoing surgery for his wounds.”
The names of the deputies and the suspect were not disclosed Monday, and would not be released, Stinebaugh wrote, until all notifications were officially made to the families of those involved.
There has been police activity in the 700 block of Mountain View, according to online Bonner 911 dispatch reports, which were removed from the web by Monday night.
Prior to its removal, however, the dispatch log showed deputies were summoned to the 700 block for a welfare check on Dec. 16, 2016. A family offense in that block was reported on Jan. 10 and one of the deputies who was reportedly involved in Monday’s shooting conducted follow-up on the family offense call on Jan. 11.
The purported suspect, a Blanchard man, has two cases that are filed under seal in Bonner County, an indication criminal charges and/or a court’s protection order may be pending. Outside motorist-related infractions and a misdemeanor, the suspect has no prior criminal record in Idaho, according to the state supreme court data repository.
It’s unclear if the suspect will make an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court today.
“I don’t know when he will be medically cleared,” Bonner County Prosecutor Louis Marshall said on Monday.
Following the shooting, multiple police agencies helped secure the area and set up a cut-off point at Blanchard-Elk and Mountain View Roads, a mile from the remote crime scene. Mountain View Road was closed to travel.
The Bonner County and Kootenai County sheriffs’ offices, Idaho State Police and the Coeur d’Alene, Spirit Lake and Priest River Police Departments aided the situation as part of the Area Critical Incident Taskforce.
The primary investigating agency is the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. Kootenai County investigators are working closely with their Bonner County counterparts, Stinebaugh said.
Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler spoke briefly to media gathered at Kootenai Health Monday afternoon. He thanked the other law enforcement agencies for their assistance.
“There were just a lot of prayers for these men. They are going to make it,” Wheeler said.
