MOSES LAKE — Two Moses Lake residents were charged for stealing a vehicle and attempting to elude deputies.

Grant County prosecutors charged Crystal Mabry, 28, of Moses Lake, with second-degree taking a motor vehicle without permission. Mabry’s co-defendant, Jose Macias, 18, of Moses Lake, was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and attempting to elude.

On New Year’s Eve the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle theft in the 100 block of Schilling Drive. The reporting party advised she started her vehicle and went into her residence. She went back outside a few minutes later and reported witnessing two subjects get into her car and take off, according to police records.

The stolen vehicle was spotted by deputies at the intersection of Arnold Drive and Larson Boulevard a few minutes later. The driver of the vehicle, believed to be Macias, took off and continued onto Randolph Road, eventually reaching Road 6.7 Northeast and later turning south onto Road I Northeast.

The vehicle made its way to Stone Road, where deputies planned to set up spike strips to stop the vehicle. The vehicle reportedly stopped in the 9800 block of Stone Road and the two occupants fled from the car on foot. A woman later contacted MACC Dispatch advising she witnessed the two suspects running through her yard and onto another property. Deputies searched the area and Macias and Mabry were reportedly located in the back of a van in the 9800 block of Stone Road.

“Mabry was obviously out of breath as she was breathing heavily. Mabry had no shoes on at the time she was taken out of the van,” wrote a deputy. “Macias had no shoes and no shirt on. It should be noted it was less than 10-degrees outside and the van had obviously not been running due to the frost all over the vehicle.”

Upon being asked why he wasn’t wearing a shirt, Macias claimed he was going through “withdrawals” and was having “hot and cold flashes.” Located next to Macias in the van was a red hooded sweatshirt, which reportedly matched a description given to police of the sweatshirt the driver of the stolen vehicle was wearing. In addition, deputies reportedly found a pair of flip flops in the stolen vehicle, which they believe Macias was wearing during the pursuit, according to police records.

Deputies were also able to locate a jacket and pair of boots, both of which are believed to be Mabry’s, near where the suspects were found. Mabry denied being in the stolen vehicle and claimed the boots did not belong to her, according to police records.
