The big picture of chiropractic, beyond pain
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 8 years AGO
When you think of chiropractic, you probably think about neck and back pain. While it is true that chiropractic treatment relieves pain, your chiropractor is generally most interested in improving your overall health by correcting your vertebral subluxations. The vertebral subluxation (less than a dislocation) is the misalignment of one or more vertebra of the spine resulting in abnormal biomechanics as well as nerve root interference. This in turn causes accelerated wear and tear or degenerative changes at that level and alters the communication between the brain and the tissue innervated at that level. A subluxation results in dis-ease processes each and every time.
There are four primary ramifications of a subluxation. The most obvious consequence is localized inflammation at the joints and at the nerve root at the level of the subluxation, resulting in pain and/or symptoms. The second ramification is an abnormal change in the biomechanics at the level of subluxation resulting in accelerated wear and tear, degenerative changes or accelerated aging of the spine at the level of subluxation. The third problem is interference to the communication from the brain to the tissue innervated at the level of subluxation. This results in a decrease in function of that tissue, predisposing the tissue to dis-ease processes down the road. Where there are multiple subluxations, there will be multiple tissue levels functioning at less than optimal levels resulting in an overall lowered immunity predisposing the body to dis-ease processes.
There are many benefits to getting a chiropractic adjustment. The first is correcting the subluxation so the body stops the inflammatory processes at the joints and at the nerve root at the level of the subluxation. The result is the symptoms go away. Secondly, the adjustment corrects the biomechanics, increases the mobility of the joints thus decreasing the accelerated wear and tear, degenerative changes or accelerated aging of the spine. The third and perhaps the most important benefit of the adjustment is by correcting the subluxation the communication between the brain and the tissue is improved resulting in optimum function and optimum chance for health and longevity of that tissue thus preventing dis-ease processes down the road. Finally, by correcting multiple subluxations the adjustment stimulates the nervous system which results in a better overall immunity thus giving the body best chance for optimal health, function and longevity.
Only chiropractors are trained to detect and correct vertebral subluxations. Having a spine free of vertebral subluxations is essential for optimal health.
