Jan. 19, 1967 — REMARKS EXCHANGED

Gov. Don Samuelson was quoted in a news dispatch from Boise as saying Sen. Merle Parsley, D-Bonner-Boundary, was “talking through his hat, which he does most of the time.”

The governor was quoted as making this statement in answer to a question about a charge made by Sen. Parsley that changes in state personnel ordered by the new governor is threatening the new merit system.

“I haven’t said anything about removing anyone under the merit system,” Samuelson said.

Senate confirmation of most appointments by the governor was proposed by Parsley as a means of halting what the senator said appeared to be “a full sale (sic) assault on the merit system.”

Parsley, speaking on the Senate floor, said the governor “has developed an early inclination for dismissing long-time valued officers and employees of the state.”

SCHWEITZER EMPLOYS 70

Schweitzer Basin ski area employed 70 persons full or part-time during the calendar year 1966, officials of the resort reported this week.

They said no survey has been made since the initial year of operation of the number of jobs created off-site indirectly by Schweitzer.

Jan. 19, 1917 — KOOTENAI NEWS

Mrs. S.P. Blair has been in Spokane the past week with her daughter, Mrs. A.E. Cherry, who is in the hospital, having had a very serious surgery.

Little Helen Burke of Culver’s Spur was taken to the Sandpoint hospital Saturday night very ill with stomach trouble but has sufficiently recovered to be moved to the home of Mrs. J.W. Reed where she and her mother will spend a few days.

CULVER-ODEN NEWS

Mrs. John Berg who has been in City hospital nearly six weeks expects to come home soon. Her children were with their grandmother, Mrs. Gooby, when the family had smallpox so they had it too. The Bergs have surely had their share of sickness. A year ago Mr. Berg was injured at the Humbird mill and lay in the hospital for several months.

NEW RESTAURANT

Mrs. Nellie Powell has taken over the Adams restaurant 206 Main, and hereafter will conduct the business. She is well known to Sandpoint people, having run the Sandpoint hotel a number of years.

LOCAL PARAGRAPHS

Warren McCurtain, just returned from Clarksfork, says the Upton drug store has on display some very fine ore specimens from the Lawrence mine near Clarksfork.

J.W. Baker, manager of the telephone company, was a business visitor in Libby and Troy yesterday.
