SANDPOINT — Bonner County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael R. Gagnon remained in serious condition Wednesday after being shot during an exchange of gunfire with an armed suspect in Blanchard.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, which is heading up the shooting investigation, released an update Wednesday on Gagnon’s condition. The condition of another deputy who was shot, Justin Penn, was upgraded Wednesday from stable to good on Wednesday, sheriff’s officials said.
The suspect accused of opening fire on Gagnon and Penn, Adam Deacon Foster, was listed in fair condition on Wednesday. Foster’s condition was unchanged from Tuesday’s report. Foster was also struck by gunfire during the confrontation.
Authorities in Kootenai County said detectives have completed their work at and around the scene of the shooting, and local roads have been reopened to normal traffic.
Gagnon, Penn and Deputy William Craffey came under fire while attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Foster, 30, at his home at 780 Mountain View Road on Monday.
The basis for the warrant has not been disclosed and two court cases involving Foster remain filed under seal at the Bonner County Courthouse.
Gagnon, 53, has been with the sheriff’s office for a year and nine months. Penn, 30, has been with the department for five and a half years, sheriff’s officials said. Craffey, 47, was not injured in the episode and has been with the department for about nine months.
