POST FALLS — This year’s Post Falls High boys basketball team can play fast as well as slow.
Lake City thought it would be a good idea to play fast against the Trojans on Friday night.
It wasn’t — at least on this night.
Jake Pfennigs scored 15 of his 20 points in the first quarter, Post Falls built a 20-point lead in the second quarter, and went on to rout the Timberwolves 75-51 in 5A Inland Empire League play at The Arena.
“I’m disappointed in myself; I don’t think our plan was very good,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “We’ll definitely do some things different next time. With that being said, we ran into a rather large buzz saw tonight. I was super impressed ... I can’t praise them enough. They just played lights-out. They shot the ball well, they adjusted to what we did. They were physical ... I’m not sure if the plan was any different if it would have been a different result.”
Pfennigs, a 6-foot-7 junior, hit all three of his 3s in the first quarter as Post Falls (10-2, 3-0 5A IEL) jetted out to a 24-15 lead. He also finished with 13 rebounds, despite sitting out the fourth quarter.
“Obviously JP’s a special kind of player,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “With his size, at the high school level, that’s a tough matchup.”
“I just love Pfennigs,” Winger said. “We wanted to make him a dribbler, and we leave him open on a couple ... but making him a dribbler, does that hurt his game? Probably not, if he plays like that. He’s a tough matchup for us.”
Kenny Louie-McGee led Lake City (10-3, 1-2) with 11 points.
Post Falls has just six scheduled home games, and Friday night’s was the Trojans’ first at The Arena since Dec. 8. The Trojans shot 6 of 16 from 3-point range in the first half, and finished 8 for 23 from behind the arc. Post Falls was 28 of 61 from the floor for the game.
Junior Tanner McCliment-Call hit two 3s and finished with 11 points. Drake Thompson also scored 11 points as all 10 Trojans scored. Five different Trojans made 3s.
“I’m really impressed with this group of guys,” McLean said. “We share the ball, we zip the ball around ... it’s hard to guard, and we’re getting wide-open shots because of that sharing of the ball. Everybody’s looking to get a better shot; no one’s going to settle.”
Post Falls used a 12-0 run in the second quarter to build a 41-21 lead.
“In the second quarter, I thought Lake City’s kids looked tired,” McLean said. “And we’re able to keep bringing guys in, and keep going, and going, and going.”
Lake City pulled within 48-37 midway through the third quarter, but Post Falls ended any comeback hopes with a 7-0 run — David Bourgard scored a basket, Thompson stole the ball and scored, then fed McCliment-Call for a 3.
Post Falls now has a two-game lead in the loss column in the 5A IEL, with three league games remaining, after Coeur d’Alene (5-7, 2-2) beat (Lewiston 8-5, 0-2) on Friday night.
Lake City travels to Lewiston on Monday. Post Falls visits Moscow on Friday.
