Post Falls girls pressure Lake City again

POST FALLS — Lake City was at full strength this time, but Post Falls’ pressure all over the court was still too much for the Timberwolves.
The Trojans forced 20 turnovers and also hit some big 3-point baskets in the first half en route to a 42-31 victory in 5A Inland Empire League girls basketball Friday night at The Arena.
Melody Kempton had 15 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots for Post Falls (15-2, 4-1 5A IEL). The Trojans won the first meeting by 23 points, but Lake City (13-4, 2-2) was missing two starters.
Two weeks later, Post Falls was successful again with the same M.O.
“That’s what we played today — 94 feet,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “We did a good job in the full court, probably a little better than I expected, since they had those other kids back. The last game we played, you have to throw that out; that wasn’t them. I was really happy with how we played today; our freshmen really stepped up. The offensive part didn’t surprise me as much as they battled defensively, being outmatched by a lot.”
Trailing 6-2 early, Post Falls scored the last 12 points of the first quarter, capped by back-to-back-to-back 3s from freshman Tyler McCliment-Call.
“That got her some confidence, got us some confidence, and gave us a little separation there,” Allert said. “Those were huge.”
McCliment-Call finished with four 3-pointers and 14 points. Post Falls built a 23-11 lead with five minutes to go in the first half, before Lake City closed to within 23-19 at halftime.
The T-Wolves pulled within 28-25 in the third quarter, but shot just 13 of 40 from the field, making it tough to maintain a run.
“They went in that zone in the first half and we were a little impatient,” Allert said of the second quarter. “I thought we just threw up some shots; we could have been more patient. And I thought we did a much better job of being patient and getting better shots in the second half — getting the shots we wanted. They dictated the shots in the first half.”
“Turnovers killed us,” Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. “They did a good job of trapping, and we didn’t do a very good job of breaking it and attacking. When you break a run-and-jump like that you’ve got to attack, because you have mismatches.”
Bridget Rieken had 11 rebounds for Lake City, but Allert was happy the Trojans held her to one basket and three points, praising the “three or four different people” who guarded her at times during the game.
Kelly praised the play of Lauren Rewers, who had 11 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, but he lamented that her teammates didn’t get her the ball enough when she was open inside. Nina Carlson also scored 11 points.
“We just had too many turnovers,” Kelly said. “We didn’t really turn the ball over against their press; we turned the ball over when we got into the half-court, and then just kind of stalled.”
Post Falls can wrap up the No. 1 seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament by beating Coeur d’Alene (5-9, 0-5) at home on Thursday.
Lake City travels to Lewiston (12-4, 3-1) on Monday in a preview of a potential No. 2 vs. No. 3 seed matchup at regionals, with the higher seed hosting. They also play Jan. 30 at Lake City.
“Monday’s a big game,” Kelly said. “We don’t want to have to go back down to Lewiston, ever again. In the (regional) tournament, we want to be able to play up this way.”
