Bozeman tops Flathead in AA Duals mat final
The Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 8 years AGO
GREAT FALLS — Flathead finished second to Bozeman at the Class AA Duals wrestling tournament on Saturday.
The Braves, now 16-2 in duals this season, fell in the title match to the Hawks, 36-27.
Flathead was without state champion Trae Vasquez (132), who is dealing with a turf toe injury. And against Bozeman, that turned out to be a nine-point swing at his weight class.
Bozeman and Flathead were tied 27-all heading into the final two matches. Bozeman won those by pin and decision.
“Bozeman wrestled us tough,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said.
“We lost three close matches (103, 152 and 182). We were in every one of those matches.”
Kenyon Fretwell (145), Garrett Reike (160), Matt Gash-Gilder (205) and Michael Lee (285) posted pins for Flathead in the finale.
Earlier in the day, Flathead beat Billings Skyview 31-24 and Butte 49-18.
Flathead had a first-round bye.
“Overall, we scrapped,” Thompson said.
“We went after them. Our second stringers wrestled really well. We’re trying to prepare ourselves for state.”
Flathead wraps up regular-season action on Thursday at home with Missoula Sentinel and Saturday at Helena Capital and Helena High.
Divisional action is Feb. 4 at Helena with state to follow in Billings Feb. 10-11.
Glacier dropped a first-round match to Great Falls High, 59-15. Caden Willis (113) and Ashton Thompson (285) had pins for the Wolfpack while Justin Gibson (138) won by decision.
Glacier has three duals left before divisionals and state — Tuesday at home with Missoula Hellgate and Saturday at Helena High and Helena Capital.
