MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake's student section, known affectionately as the Tribe, turned its attention to the sideline and began chanting the names of statistician Brandon Stevens, inactive player Jordan Rios and head coach John Hohman.
By the fourth quarter, there was not much to see on the court.
In a highly-anticipated game that would break a tie for second place in the Columbia Basin Big Nine, Moses Lake led by as much as 32 points and dismantled Eisenhower 85-66.
“We got them in foul trouble because of taking the ball off the bounce and that's what we needed to,” Hohman said. “We needed to get to the rack and those guys really did a good job of attacking the second and third closeout, paint touches were up... I think our first eight possessions were two swings plus a paint touch and we scored on all of those and that's critical for us to be successful.”
After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Chiefs opened up a seven-point lead in the second before standout Eisenhower guard Deltay Redick suffered a right ankle injury mid-way through the quarter. Redick, who had already scored seven points, would not return.
The Cadets began to unravel with their leader off the court.
A jump ball was called when Quincy Backes and Gio Walker were tied up on a rebound. Thinking he had possession, Backes expressed his displeasure by spiking the basketball, drawing the first of Eisenhower's three technical fouls.
Phillips and Evan McLean poured in 16 and 12 points, respectively, in the first half and the Chiefs led 46-30 at intermission.
“We could feel that they were starting to fall apart,” senior captain Ryan Karstetter said. “We took advantage of it really well and just pushed it and pushed it and pushed it and we were able to get up on them pretty good and they just kept shutting down even more.”
Already up big, Moses Lake opened the third quarter on a 17-7 run.
A technical foul on the Cadets' bench preceded a technical by Efrain Araujo after the junior guard was called for a personal foul against Walker.
Walker made all four of his attempts from the charity stripe, pushing the lead to 30 points.
Moses Lake now holds sole possession of second place in the CBBN and only trails Davis by one win for the league lead.
“We've got a really good shot at controlling this league,” Karstetter said. “We control our own destiny the whole way. If we win out we're first in the league.”
