Columbia Basin roundup: Moses Lake wrestling finishes third at Dream Duals

SPOKANE — Moses Lake finished 3-1 at Dream Duals to take third place.
After two wins to start the tournament over Walla Walla and Central Valley, Moses Lake was edged by Chiawana 37-26 in the Class 4A semifinals. The Chiefs enjoyed a double digit lead over the Riverhawks before losing the final five matches.
Behind Cyrus Knoll's (145) 7-4 win against Cavan Weber, Moses Lake defeated Sumner for third place 36-34.
Mead routed Chiawana 56-6 to win the tournament championship.
“There was some good individual wrestling,” head coach Jaime Garza said.
Hunter Cruz (160) finished 4-0, including one forfeit. Top-ranked Chandler Fluaitt won by fall in all three of his matches, which included a victory over Central Valley's Wyatt Wickham.
Daiman Vasquez (182) defeated No. 11 Noah Wilson of Sumner 9-4.
With a split squad, Othello finished 3-2 overall in the Class 2A bracket. The Huskies lost to White River 44-36 and East Valley (Spokane) 40-31 before defeated Central Washington Athletic League foe Ellensburg 35-32.
Top-ranked Toppenish blew out Othello 66-15, cruising to the 2A title.
Othello won its final dual against West Valley (Spokane) 48-28.
2016 state participant Chris Melo (106) finished 3-1.
Warden won the championship in the girls bracket. The Cougars received a first-round bye before beating West Valley 57-12, Mary Walker 40-33, White River 45-24 and Kelso 48-21.
Othello girls second at Grandview Invite
GRANDVIEW — In its finale regular season tournament, Othello missed out on the Grandview Invitational team title by one point.
Sunnyside totaled 201 points to Othello's 200.
The Huskies had 11 placers and one champion — Nikki Velazquez (130).
Gabby Rodriguez (100), Iyalhye Barraza (115) and Kaylee Martinez (140) were runners-up. Ephrata's Mya Spencer defeated Barraza in the finals.
Boys basketball
Prosser 74, Ephrata 61
PROSSER — Ephrata scored 24 points in the fourth quarter, but couldn't recover from a big deficit and lost at Prosser 74-61.
Tiger leading-scorer Cameron Clark was limited to nine points; Jakob Oxos led Ephrata with 20.
The trio of Noah Flores, Nate Brown and Scott Blakney scored 15 points each for the Mustangs.
East Valley 68, Quincy 36
YAKIMA — Quincy was out-rebounded 39-22 and lost to East Valley 68-36.
Trajan Trevino scored a team-high 17 points for the Jacks.
Warden wins twice, stays in first
JR Delgado scored 55 points in two games and Warden won twice to maintain first place in the South Central Athletic Conference East.
Delgado notched 27 and the Cougars beat Columbia 63-54. Warden led 38-20 at halftime.
Delgado scored 28 and Adam Richins added 16 in a rout of Connell 63-43. The Cougars gained separation with a 36-16 advantage over the second and third quarters.
Brewster 69, Soap Lake 50
BREWSTER — Soap Lake lost at fourth-ranked Brewster 69-50.

Moses Lake Christian 67, Thorp-Easton 24
MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake Christian improved to 4-2 in the Central Washington 1B league with a 67-24 win against Thorp-Easton.
The Lions sit in third place in the league.
Girls basketball
Prosser 57, Ephrata 50
PROSSER — Katelyn Ostrowski's 13 points wasn't enough as Ephrata lost on the road to Prosser 57-50.
The Tigers were unable to make up a 26-17 halftime deficit.
East Valley 60, Quincy 17
YAKIMA — Quincy trailed 42-11 at halftime and lost to East Valley 60-17.
Alysha Donovan scored a team-high nine points.
Warden loses a pair
Bailey Whitney scored 10 points each in losses to Columbia and Connell.
Warden dropped its game to Columbia 53-31 and lost on Saturday to Connell 53-31.
Aubree Skone added nine points against the Eagles.
Brewster 64, Soap Lake 16
BREWSTER — Soap Lake struggled against No. 8 Brewster and lost 64-16.

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake Christian dropped a home game to Thorp-Easton 42-34.
The Lions are 1-5 in the Central Washington 1B league and are in fifth place.

Big Bend 76, Columbia Basin 70
MOSES LAKE — Big Bend ended a two-game skid with a 76-70 win against Columbia Basin.
Jacob McCord continued his monster season with 27 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Leo Behrend and Jai Jai Ely added 17 and 10 points, respectively.
Women's college basketball
Columbia Basin 95, Big Bend 81
MOSES LAKE — Big Bend lost a shootout to Columbia Basin 95-81.
The Hawks had three players score over 20 points: Sierra Perez, Alexcis Higginbotham and Emily Botkin. Botkin had a game-high 28.
Haily Garrity led the Vikings with 16 points.
Big Bend has dropped to seventh place in the NWAC East after four straight losses.
