Seattle stops Chiefs in overtime

SPOKANE — Austin Strand scored the game-winner 3:48 into overtime for the Seattle Thunderbirds in a 3-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs in Western Hockey League play in front of 3,237 at the Spokane Arena on Tuesday.

Seattle led 2-0 after the second period as Alexander True scored on a power-play goal to open the scoring at 7:34 in the second. Strand scored his first of the night six minutes later to give the Thunderbirds a 2-0 advantage.

Eli Zummack scored his fifth goal of the season 5:31 into the third period to cut the deficit to 2-1 and Alex Mowbray tied it midway through the period, scoring his first goal with the Chiefs.

Spokane forced overtime, killing off a 5-on-3 power play.

Spokane (20-20-6-2, 48 points) now trails Portland by one point for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Chiefs travel to Cranbrook, British Columbia, to face Kootenay on Friday.
