Super Bowl will fill in the blanks

New England or Atlanta?

Mark Koerner or Steve Griffitts?

Coeur d’Alene Food Bank or a mystery local charity?

So many questions — and answers — on hold until Sunday night, Feb. 5.

That’s life in the fast lane with the Coeur d’Alene Press All-Star Pigskin Prognosticators, folks.

This year’s rendition awaits only the Super Bowl to fill in a bunch of big blanks. What we know is where all 12 players stand at the moment.

We also know that in all of the games-within-games, where players from two similar professions are pitted against each other, a clear winner has emerged. (There are no losers. As Steve Griffitts told many dismayed Cubs fans last September after the St. Louis Cardinals had won a game in Chicago, “The Cubs didn’t lose today. They just came in second.”)

The standings:

1. Mark Koerner — 184 wins

2. Steve Griffitts — 183

3. Ryan Davis — 182

4. Blaine Bennett — 181

5. Vic Holmes — 174

6. Eve Knudtsen — 173

7. Duffy Smock — 170

8. John Beutler — 166

9. Jeff Runge — 164

10. (tie) Tim Kiefer — 162

10. (tie) Jeff Conroy — 162

12. Rob Smith — 159

Koerner can’t lose the championship, but Griffitts can tie him. With major Press advertising prizes awaiting the top three finishers, Bennett could tie Davis for third place, making a winner of both of them.

All depends on their Super Bowl picks, which will be announced next Thursday in The Press.

Those one-on-one battles? Winners are Koerner over Runge, Griffitts over Holmes, Davis over Conroy, Knudtsen over Smith, Smock over Beutler, and Bennett over Kiefer.

And as for that mystery charity mentioned in the third sentence? We’ll shed some light there, but not just yet. Then it wouldn’t be a mystery, would it?
