Sandpoint Waldorf students help seniors

SANDPOINT — Students from the Sandpoint Waldorf School spent the day Monday helping out area seniors as they embarked on a community service project for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
In addition to going to the homes of area seniors to to shovel snow, the fourth- through eighth-graders shoveled out the huge berms at the Sandpoint Area Seniors, Inc. and DayBreak Center parking lot on Main Street. They cleared the sidewalks and area where the benches and peace pole are located by the "SASi Elder Tree," as well as cleared the ice from the wheelchair ramp.
"What a blessing, especially clearing out the huge pile of snow by the entrance gate to the DayBreak Center," said Ellen Weissman, SASi executive director. "Even when they were exhausted they kept going. They put Martin Luther King's words into action."
Weissman added a "special thank you" to Julie McCallan, SWS education administrator, and to the fourth- through eighth-grade teachers, Christopher Lunde, Sarah Shaffer, Kelly Kietzman, Elisabeth Tarsio, and Yvette McGowan, as well as parent volunteers Meryl Kastin, Paul Johnson, Oliver Pratt, and to all the children who worked so hard to help out area seniors Monday.
