ROYAL CITY — Many are the times you’ve heard the expression: If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

Red Rock Elementary students, who have been out of school since Jan. 6 because of flood damage incurred at the school on Saturday, Jan. 7, did not go back to school Monday as planned.

The school was ready for use, Superintendent Roger Trail said, but icy weather Monday morning forced the postponement of the entire day throughout the Royal School District.

The building is not in perfect condition, Trail said, but it can be used for classes. There is still some cosmetic work to do.

Freezing pipes in the school’s overhead fire suppression system burst late Saturday, Jan. 7. The ensuing flood was not detected until the morning of Jan. 8.

Maintenance and custodial crews were notified. They stopped the water flow and immediately began removing water from the premises. Restoration crews from around the area were mobilized. They finished the majority of the work last week.

A total cost is not yet known, but it will all likely be covered by the District’s insurance.

Updated information is available on the District web page at www.royal.wednet.edu. Information is also shared on the District Facebook page. Parents and staff continue to be updated through the District’s automated phone messaging system.
