COEUR d’ALENE — They didn’t quite cross paths at Tri-State.
Weather kept it from happening again at Rollie Lane.
In Saturday’s championship match in the North Idaho Rumble at 120 pounds, A.J. De La Rosa got the chance to show that Post Falls still runs the state on the wrestling mat.
De La Rosa pinned Capital High of Boise’s Cade Krishnek — a two-time state 5A individual champion — in 5 minutes, 39 seconds, one of three champions for the Trojans on the way to a fourth straight Rumble title.
“A.J. brought his ‘A’ game all weekend,” Post Falls assistant coach Jeremy Zender said. “He had a great tournament and is coming on at the right time.”
Ridge Lovett (113 pounds) and Brayden Huber (145) also win titles for Post Falls, which ran away with the team title after putting eight wrestlers in the finals.
“Ridge wrestled really well and had to deal with some bigger guys,” Zender said. “Brayden is wrestling confident right now, and it showed. Those guys stepped up all weekend and being team leaders, it was awesome to see.”
Post Falls finished with 12 placers.
Brian Edelblute (126), Larry Johnson (138), Jared Walker (195), Alex Edelblute (98) and Sam Edelblute (106) won individual titles for Lakeland, which finised second with 206.5 points.
Johnson was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler following an 8-2 decision over Jason Burchell of Post Falls in the 138-pound championship.
“Larry wrestled really tough all weekend,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said of Johnson. “He’s been wrestling really well and looked solid all the way through.”
Edelblute also pointed to Brian Edelblute’s win over Matt McLeod at 126 pounds as a key moment.
“For him, he’s always kind of the underdog and comes to wrestle, whoever is put in front of him,” coach Edelblute said of Sam. “He just shines at the right time.”
Tournament host Coeur d’Alene finished tied for third with Mountain Home, with both schools finishing with 182 points.
“It was a great tournament overall with some great competition,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We really improved over the weekend and are making our way.”
Coeur d’Alene finished with 10 placers, including champions Casey Randles (182) and Alex Marshall (220).
“All of our placers wrestled really well all weekend,” Moffat said. “I thought our little guys Dom (Jessos) at 98 pounds and Hunter (Schueller) at 106 competed really well. Max Peressini (145) and Mitchell Moffat at 152 were good. Randles was himself and Alex won a tough one in the finals. The tournament was extremely competitive.”
Priest River’s Noah Jamison (160) and Sandpoint’s Andrew Webster (170) also claimed titles.
