Hearing reset in deadly crash case

SANDPOINT — A preliminary hearing has been reset for a Bonner County man accused of accidentally killing one pedestrian and seriously injuring another.
The hearing in Peter Franklin Goullette’s case was set for Wednesday, but the state and the defense agreed to postpone it until July 26, court records show.
The hearing will determine if the state has enough evidence to justify trying Goullette on a felony vehicular manslaughter charge in 1st District Court.
Goullette can also waive the hearing and proceed to district court without contesting the evidence at the magistrate court level.
Goullette is free on $50,000 bail while the case is pending.
Goullette, 23, is accused of hitting two pedestrians who were walking on McGhee Road in June 2016. Katherine Stelzer, a 61-year-old Mead, Wash., resident died at the scene and Zualita Updike, 50, of Clark Fork, was seriously injured, according to Idaho State Police.
Goullette was southbound in a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when he collided with the pedestrians, who were walking southbound.
Two witnesses told investigators that Goullette was speeding down the road. One of the witnesses further stated that Goullette was looking down and away from the road prior to the crash, court records indicate. Goullette told investigators that he was concerned his son had unclasped the buckle on his safety seat, a probable cause affidavit said.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Goullette is further charged with reckless driving for colliding with Updike.
