LPOHS students help mark storm drains

Students in Brenda Woodward’s water chemistry class at Lake Pend Oreille High School immersed themselves in a project this year to bring attention to storm drains.
Collaborating with Rod Berget, city of Sandpoint, and Randy Wilhelm, Lake Pend Oreille’s art teacher, the Lake Pend Oreille High School students designed a stencil to mark storm drains in the community.
During their water science class, the LPOHS students learned that stormwater carries many pollutants and is not treated prior to it entering communities’ waterways.
The stencils were designed to heighten community awareness that the drains channel storm water directly to Sand Creek, Lake Pend Oreille, and the Pend Oreille River.
Students spray painted “dump no waste, drains to lake” as a reminder to the public to be mindful of their impact on the area’s water quality.
