Basin roundup: Spuds rally for split with Titans

MOSES LAKE — Central Washington picked up a much-needed split with Twin City Tuesday at Larson Playfield.

The Titans used an 11-run seventh inning to win the opener 14-0. The Spuds bounced back to scored four runs in the first inning of Game 2 and win 9-2.

In the first game, the Titans held a 3-0 lead through three innings before their offense came alive.

“I don’t know what happened,” head coach Robert Haensel said. “It was one of those explosive things.”

The Spuds scattered six hits.

The Spuds took advantage of some errors and had timely hits to lead 4-0 after one inning in the late game. Cody Goodwin had a bunt RBI single and Zach Valdez hit an RBI single to left field.

Valdez, Cameron Duke and Brandon Swett had two RBI each.

Ezekyel Ochoa went five innings in Game 2 and Austin Valdez recorded the final six outs.

The Spuds have eight more league games and sit in fourth place. The top four teams advance to the state tournament.

Walleyes swept by Yakima Valley

YAKIMA — Moses Lake lost a pair of road games to Yakima Valley 4-1 and 15-0.

In the opener, the Peppers held a 4-0 lead after three innings before Matt Vasquez drove in the lone Walleyes run on a fielder’s choice. Gabe Passey had both of Moses Lake’s hits.

Yakima Valley scored six runs in the first inning of the Game 2 rout.

J.C. Worsham and Chayton Fisk had one hit each.

Sun Devils stung by Bees

YAKIMA — The Sun Devils were swept by the West Valley Bees 16-6 and 13-3.

Both games ended in five innings.

Carter Goff was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the first game.

Chiefs undefeated at Redneck Camp

PASCO — Behind strong performances from the middle and heavyweights, Moses Lake finished the second day of the Pasco Redneck Camp undefeated.

The Chiefs won all seven of their duals.

“So far we’ve been wrestling very well,” head coach Jaime Garza said.

Moses Lake beat West Valley 46-18, Zillah 42-9, Selah 52-3, Sunnyside 39-21, Hanford 56-21, Mary Walker 63-18 and Pasco 42-21.

Hunter Cruz, Daiman Vasquez and Payton Castro are undefeated at the camp.

Garza was also impressed with some of the incoming freshman.
