'Trike' fly-in arrives in Sandpoint

(Courtesy photo) Pilots from all over the country are rendezvousing at Olmstead Sky Ranch in Sandpoint for the United States’ largest fly-in of “trikes.” As a result, area residents will also be seeing the planes flying out of Sandpoint Airport, and some amphibious trikes will be landing and taking off on Lake Pend Oreille near the swimming area, said Todd Ware of Air Therapy Aviation in Bigfork, Mont.

Sandpoint residents might notice an increasing number of delta wing, light sport aircraft in the skies this week.

Pilots from all over the country will rendezvous at Olmstead Sky Ranch in Sandpoint for the United States’ largest fly-in of “trikes” ­— powered hanglider, light-sport aircrafts, etc. — today through Sunday.

The planes will also be flying out of Sandpoint Airport, and some amphibious trikes will be landing and taking off on Lake Pend Oreille near the swimming area, said Todd Ware of Air Therapy Aviation in Bigfork, Mont.

For those who are interested in light-sport aviation, FAA certified flight instructors will available to conduct discovery flights for the general public. In addition, the group will be offering discounted flights to veterans also.
