July 30, 1967 – CITY OF TENTS

Over 913 tents are already up on the XII World Jamboree grounds at Farragut and over 5,000 more will go up when the 14,000 Scouts arrive.

Most tents are bright red, yellow, green or blue. The largest are for the commissary and trading posts. The GHQ dining tent is 42 by 129 feet.

L/CPL. DAVID KALB RETURNS TO VIETNAM

L/Cpl. David Kalb, U.S. Marine Corps, was home on leave in June. He had spent the past 14 months in Vietnam and had an enjoyable leave visiting relatives and classmates before leaving July 12 to return to Vietnam for six months’ more duty. Kalb is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kalb of the Dufort community,

SANDPOINT SAND USED FOR JAMBOREE

Mayor Floyd Gray and the City of Sandpoint earned the deep gratitude of the Jamboree organization by providing sand from Sandpoint, which was trucked to the new beach at Beaver bay when it was learned that the swimming beach would require more sand than was on hand.

SATURDAY PARCEL SERVICE RESUMED

Postmaster Robert Willer announces that parcel post deliveries in Sandpoint and nearly 5000 other cities are expanded from five to six days a week. Six day a week delivery had been cut back in May 1964 as an economy measure.

July 30, 1917 – CHAUTAUQUA TO OPEN

Next week is Chautauqua week in Sandpoint. Arrangements have been made by the local committee to pitch the tent of the big six days’ attraction on the central school ground.

Among this year’s attractions are the Royal Venetian band; Dr. G.W. Ray, Bolivian explorer lecturing on the interior countries of South America; Colorado Governor Carlson, who gives his lecture, “The Price of Progress;” the Military Girls concert and The Grass Alpine Yodelers.

SHALL CITY GO TO MANAGER PLAN?

Petitions have been in circulation this week calling upon the city council to call a special election to determine whether or not the city of Sandpoint shall go to a city manager form of government under an act passed by the last Idaho legislature. Under that act, incorporated cities of 2500 or more persons may elect that form of government by majority vote.

CANNING CLUBS TO START NEXT WEEK

County Supt. Mrs. Tuck will start next week with a demonstration team of young ladies to organize canning clubs in the county. Mrs. Tuck asks that women desiring to organize clubs communicate with her. The work will be done in the school houses and is to carry out the president’s call for mobilization of the resources of the country.
