COEUR d’ALENE — Almost a half-pound of cocaine and a half-dozen LSD tabs were among illegal drugs seized by police in an early morning traffic stop Thursday near the Ironwood shopping center.

Jayden K. Brady, 24, was arrested and appeared later Thursday in First District Court where he was charged with one count of trafficking cocaine (a felony), one felony count of possession of a controlled substance and three misdemeanor drug charges.

Trafficking carries a mandatory minimum three-year prison sentence, with a maximum penalty of life in prison. The controlled substance possession charge carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.

Police said Brady was the passenger in a white Ford Taurus that was stopped by Coeur d’Alene police around 4 a.m. Thursday after the driver of the vehicle, Courtney R. Huffaker, failed to use her turn signal while heading north on Government Way and Ironwood Drive, police said.

Patrol officers smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and in the following search, found marijuana flakes in the car’s ashtray, police said.

Officers found a small amount of marijuana in Huffaker’s purse, and a backpack near the front passenger seat, allegedly belonging to Brady, contained approximately 7.1 ounces of cocaine in separate packages, according to police.

Police also seized a scale, a mirror, a razor blade and approximately a dozen smaller plastic bags inside a large plastic bag from the backpack, according to a police report. Two prescription bottles with other people’s names on the labels were also located in Brady’s backpack, along with marijuana and marijuana pipes, police said.

In Brady’s wallet, police found $1,011 and seven tabs of LSD wrapped in wax paper, according to a police report.

At his first appearance Thursday afternoon, Brady told Magistrate James Stow he had less than $500 and could not afford an attorney. He was appointed a public defender.

He asked to be released on his own recognizance, telling the court that his family owns property and has lived in the area for eight years, but Stow denied the request.

“My concern when there is a possible sentence of life ... is people showing up for court,” Stow said.

The magistrate followed the recommendation of prosecutors and set bond at $40,000.

Huffaker was cited for the marijuana and released, police said.

Brady’s next appearance in magistrate court will be for a probable cause hearing. A date has not been set.
