The Whitefish Climate Action Planning Committee will discuss the development of a city climate action plan during an open house on June 14 in the City Hall lobby.

The committee was established by Whitefish City Council and tasked by Mayor John Muhlfeld with identifying opportunities for the city, school district and community to conserve energy, reduce costs and prepare for future climate goals.

The open house offers a chance for community members to learn about the committee’s objectives as well as to share their own input on energy conservation and sustainability.

“We’re beginning to develop specific strategies, so now is a good time to ask city residents for their input,” City Councilor and committee chair Richard Hildner said. “What should be our overall goal for saving energy as a community, and how should we get there?”

The committee is focusing on shaping climate action strategies in nine specific areas: buildings and energy use; transportation; water sources and conservation; wastewater management; waste reduction and purchasing; future growth and hazard areas; forests and open land; local food sourcing; and education and behavior.

Hildner stressed the importance of keeping an open mind with regards to energy conservation and climate change.

“Regardless of an individual’s view on issues such as global warming or the importance of clean energy, every individual in Whitefish stands to benefit from cost savings that flow from energy conservation and reductions in fossil fuel consumption,” he said.

The open house will take place between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. in City Hall. Hildner will give a brief presentation about the committee at 7 p.m.
