SANDPOINT — A Bonner County woman who drunkenly crashed her vehicle and was later found on the couch of a stranger’s home was ordered Monday to serve 30 days in jail.

First District Judge Barbara Buchanan allowed Carol Louise Brown to serve the term on weekends, court records indicate.

Brown, 56, was charged with felony driving under the influence, unlawful entry, leaving the scene of a collision and possessing an open container of alcohol. The open container and leaving the scene charges were dismissed amid pretrial proceedings.

In exchange for a plea of guilty to the DUI charge, the unlawful entry charge was dismissed, according to court documents.

Brown was charged after the single-vehicle crash on Porath Road in September 2016. The crash apparently went undiscovered until a nearby homeowner discovered Brown on her couch.

Brown was charged at the felony level due to prior DUI convictions in Bonner County in 2000, 2006 and 2008.

Brown dodged an immediate prison term because of progress she made in substance abuse counseling and outpatient treatment, court records indicated.

Buchanan also placed Brown on probation for three years, during which time she has to drive a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device that can detect alcohol in her system.

Brown was also fined $500 and her license to drive was suspended for a year.

Brown was given credit for two days of pretrial incarceration.

If Brown falters on probation, she risks the imposition of a two- to four-year prison term.
