June 15, 1917 — OBSERVED FLAG DAY
A short but interesting demonstration took place last evening in observance of Flag Day. At 7:30 a parade was organized at the corner of Cedar and Fourth streets which after marching down Cedar and First streets, disbanded at the Central school building where a brief program was rendered. The organizations represented in the parade were a squad of Company H, the Girl Helpers drawing a float, members of the Grand Army of the Republic the Woman’s Relief Corps and the Home Guards.

TELEPHONE GIRLS OUT ON STRIKE
A strike of telephone operators and linemen connected with the Interstate Utilities company that went into effect at 5 o’clock Saturday, is still on. The cities affected and numbers of operators out, are Sandpoint 8, Coeur d’Alene 9, Wallace 8, St. Maries 5, Kellogg 7, Bonners Ferry 3, Harrison 2. Service in Sandpoint, though crippled at times, has been kept up with a degree of efficiency except for part of Monday, when the exchange was dead.
In brief the demand is for $50 per month for operators and $5 a day for linemen, with double pay for overtime. The pay heretofore, according to statements by the strikers, has been under $40 on average, and $4 a day, $1 per hour for overtime, for linemen. Efforts of the city officials have thus far accomplished nothing toward an adjustment of the differences.
