Lums drop two on first day of wood-bat tourney
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 7 years, 7 months AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen allowed just one hit, but Gonzaga Prep won on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 3-2 victory over the Lums in the second game of the first day of the Best of the Northwest tournament Thursday at Thorco Field.
Earlier, Coeur d’Alene lost to the Spokane Expos 7-4.
Against G-Prep, in a game played in a constant drizzle, Justin Bates walked and scored on an error in the sixth to tie the game for Coeur d’Alene. Lums pitchers walked nine batters.
Against the Expos, Jack Bloom went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Coeur d’Alene. Kodie Kolden of Lake City hit a grand slam to key a five-run fourth for the Expos, and teammate Kyle Manzardo, also of Lake City, pitched four innings of one-hit, shutout ball, with three strikeouts.
It was the first wood-bat tournament for many of the Lums.
“I thought we played the Expos tough,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kevin Dunton said. “They swing the bats well. In the second game, we didn’t swing the bats well.”
Today, the Lums (5-8) are scheduled to play the Northwest Blaze at 12:30 p.m. and the Twin City Titans at 5:30, both at Thorco Field.
