The Eva Horning Park in Superior got some new signage and was marked with a Play in the Park unveiling event held on June 4. Folks gathered around as Liz Gupton and friends pulled blue tarpa off of three signs.
One honoring the park’s namesake, Eva Horning, the other sign thanks Tricon Timber for their donation of “engineered wood fiber” which is specifically designed to provide a safe area of cushioning around and under the playground equipment. A third sign was dedicated to businesses and individuals who donated to the project.
The park is named after Eva Horning, who was born in Missoula in 1885. She married Fred Horning in 1910 and the couple moved to Superior in 1921 where they lived for 50 years. In 1952 the Town purchased 4.5 acres of land from the Hornings and built the park which has grown.
Over the past few years, the Mineral County Community Foundation raised funds to purchase the new playground equipment which was installed last year. The park also has a baseball field, tennis courts, picnic tables and grills and a swimming pool.
Eva’s grandson Charles and his wife, Mary Ann Horning, from Washington State also attended the unveiling on June 4. After the dedication participants enjoyed music, refreshments and a lot of new equipment to play on.
