Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass in Glacier National Park likely won’t open this week, noted park spokeswoman Lauren Alley.
“We have a little bit longer,” Alley said Thursday.
She said crews are still putting up barriers where avalanches have damaged guardrails and they’re cleaning up debris on the road. In addition, plumbers are working to get the water system up and running at the Logan Pass visitor center. The water system is drained every fall so it doesn’t freeze. Logan Pass has both vault toilets and bathrooms with running water.
Alley declined to project when the road might open over the pass.
Last year it opened on June 17.
The latest opening ever was July 12 in 2011 because of deep snows.
Visitors can still get into the higher terrain — they just have to do it by bicycle or on foot. The road on the east side is open to vehicles to Jackson Glacier Overlook. While crews are working, the hiker-biker access is to Siyeh Bend.
On the west side, the road is closed to vehicles at Avalanche Creek. The hiker-biker access is at Haystack Creek while crews are working. When crews aren’t working, there are no restrictions.
All of Glacier’s secondary roads are now open.
In addition, the popular Avalanche Lake Trail has reopened. It was closed because of grizzly bear activity.
