CW Spuds end tournament run with loss to hosts

MISSOULA, Mont. — Central Washington ended its trip to Montana with a pair of losses to tournament host the Missoula Mavericks.

The Spuds lost to the Mavericks 11-2 and 8-4 at the Senior Legion AAA Missoula Mavericks Memorial Tournament.

Spuds 10, Lewis & Clark 9

The Central Washington Spuds showed a little power hitting in their victory over Lewis & Clark from Idaho. Brandon Swett continued his hot streak with the bat with a triple, driving in three runs with a 3-for-4 performance. Cameron Duke doubled to drive in a run for the Spuds, who finished the game with 11 hits. Ezekyel Ochoa went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Blake Sidwell and Michael Chase both went 2-4 with an RBI.

The Valdez’s closed the door on the mound. Zach Valdez went 5 innings for the win and Austin Valdez pitched the last two innings for the save.

Spuds 5, La Grande, Ore. 4

Central Washington chipped away with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to come back and get La Grande, Ore., on Saturday. Brandon Swett went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Cameron Duke and Michael Harrington both doubled to drive in a run. Bailey Sanchez and Daniel Ochoa also added to the RBI mix with an RBI apiece for the Spuds, who improved to 2-1 with the win.

Zach Valdez pitched six strong innings with six strikeouts and Blake Sidwell got the save.

Bellevue 16, Spuds 4

Bellevue Honda scored five runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to hand the Spuds their first loss of the AAA Legion Tournament.

The Spuds did close the gap to 6-4 with four runs in the third inning, but had just four hits for the game.
